Six staff members at Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver are seeing a little clearer since the Chilliwack RCMP Detachment donated six computers to the organization. Previously working on outdated computers with lacking capacity, these six staff members now enjoy flat screens, current programs and ever important reliability.
Some Big Brothers' staff computers were so ancient they didn't have hard drives and staff couldn't even see full websites on their screens, making the RCMP donation more a necessity than just a luxury.
"The RCMP makes an effort to donate to charitable organizations," comments Constable Lea-Anne Dunlop, Communications Officer for the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP. "We have even sent computers as far as Africa before. Donating to Big Brothers is particularly important to us because organizations like theirs are a predecessor to making our communities a better place to live."
Various RCMP detachments throughout the Lower Mainland support Big Brothers through several programs. A Vancouver RCMP officer sits on the Board of Directors and the Burnaby detachment is highly involved in Big Brothers' In-School Mentoring program which allows adult volunteers to spend one hour each week with an elementary school aged child on school grounds.
"We're so eager to direct our funding straight to our programs and the children we serve that we often go without latest technologies here at the office," Director of Development Sharon McLeod explains. "Donations like these save our charity the money it would take to purchase these computers ourselves."
