SFU Co-Op student Rose Baraty was an Event Assistant for The 2008 Bowl for Big Brothers Classic. As a beach themed event complete with calypso music, bongo drums and palm trees, you may be surprised to find a Political Science major signing up for six weeks in a bowling centre. However, should you have the pleasure to meet Rose and her humorous personality, you would understand.
"I think it is important to be compassionate. The bowling campaign was an opportunity to feed my compassion and have a great time as well," Rose explains.
And great times are exactly what Rose experienced during her time with Big Brothers. She finds it hard to pin down a favorite moment but fondly reflects on an event where one of the male bowlers wore a speedo and a wrestling mask. Her infectious laughs tells the story.
Rose also loved the energy of the large events but preferred the intimacy of the small events where the companies regularly invited staff to bowl with them.
"Working at the events never felt like work. I always had so much fun watching everyone play and let loose that it felt more like a social party than work."
