Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) wishes to acknowledge the life of long-time friend and agency supporter Frank Rigney who passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. As a Big Brother for many years, he truly embraced Big Brothers’ value of friendship, guidance and fun. Frank also translated his passion for mentoring to fundraising by conceptualizing the Big Brothers Whistler Golf Classic, presented by Canaccord Financial.
Forging the relationship between BBGV and Canaccord, Frank laid a foundation for an incredible partnership that would generate over $3 million for children’s mentoring programs in the Whistler golf tournament’s 15 year history. Sitting on the planning committee each year, he confirmed countless sponsors and single handedly solidified lasting relationships for our charity. As means to honour Frank’s contribution to the tournament, BBGV awarded Frank the Brian Harwood Award in 2004.
In 2008, Frank was awarded BBGV’s most prestigious honor, the Ted Ticknor Award. A life-time achievement award of sorts, the award honours an individual who inspires friendship through his/ her significant contribution to the agency through mentoring, financial support and organizational development. Frank was a fitting recipient for his unparalleled contribution to our organization.
In fact, remaining true to his character, Frank remained involved with BBGV even when the Whistler tournament was cancelled. He offered guidance and support when the replacement tournament was introduced in 2009 and continued to utilize his connections to ensure funding was in place to continue BBGV’s services for families.
Whether at the golf tournaments or various agency events, Frank was always smiling and cracking jokes. His presence will be greatly missed but also maintained in the thousands of friendships his contribution allowed. We look forward to honouring Frank’s incredible spirit at The Canaccord Financial Big Brothers Golf Classic in September and the Evening of Thanks in October.
