Big Brothers Raises Age Eligibility From 7-12 to 7-14
Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) has raised their age eligibility for Little Brothers from 7 – 12 to 7 – 14 years old. Given the amount of requests from both mothers and school officials to find Big Brothers for boys aged 13 and 14, the mentoring agency decided to make the change in an effort to help more children and youth.
With few programs available for boys in their early teens in the Lower Mainland, the longstanding Big Brothers program is expected to fill a much needed niche.
“Boys in this age group often need some extra support,” explains Joanne Kautz-Allard, Program Director at BBGV. “A Big Brother can provide guidance through with this important transitional stage of their lives.”
BBGV and their satellite offices in the Sea to Sea Corridor and on the Sunshine Coast helped 906 children this past year. They expect the new age eligibility to allow many more children to benefit from their services in 2010/11. Their annual goal is 975 matches.
