Big Brothers Big Sisters Family Fun Day in Sechelt Made Possible Through Emergency Services
Some RCMP staff involved as In-School Mentors in the Big Brothers program wanted to give back even more so they helped coordinate a Family Fun Day at Hackett Park in Sechelt, BC on Saturday, August 29th. It was a great event and many children and families enjoyed a variety of activities.
Constable Lana McNeil and her colleagues are long time supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and their enthusiasm showed in their amazing creation of games and activities for the children. Pat Wenger, the Community Liaison for the BBBS satellite office on the Sunshine Coast, relies on such community support.
“The children were thrilled to be able to play all the games and even got their face painted by one of the Constables,” explains Pat. “This type of support in the community is what really leads to the success of our programs.”
Besides games, prizes, a delicious BBQ and even a draw for some mountain bikes, there was also a fast paced game of baseball between the Fireman and RCMP, with everyone being able to join. A silent auction and benefit dinner in the evening at the Sechelt Golf Course rounded out the day with mostly fireman and RCMP in attendance.
“We’re hoping this becomes an annual event that the community looks forward to,” Pat exclaims. “As more people become aware of our programs and get involved, then they’ll see the huge impact these programs have on kids. Our RCMP volunteers have already enjoyed some great successes and can see with their own eyes how their time ultimately helps children.” Pat hopes that with events like Family Fun Day, the community will be inclined to find out more about the programs and hopefully follow the example of their own RCMP and volunteer as In-School Mentors.
