Volunteer with Children of Non-English Speaking Parents

January 13, 2012

Considering volunteering? There are children on our wait list right now for the Big Brothers program whose parent's/ guardian's language requirements also place them in what we call the Diversity Program.

With the diverse population in Vancouver, Big Brothers strives to be a resource for all families. Given agency mentoring coordinators must be able to communicate with parents/ guardians to ensure child safety and match success, we have implemented two means for non-English speaking parents to enroll their children in our programs.

  • They may designate a trusted friend or family member who can act as a translator during the intake process and regular check-ins, OR
  • Chinese speaking families may liaise with Mandarin or Cantonese speaking Big Brothers staff

What does this mean for volunteers willing to be part of this program? It's really no different! You just need to be prepared to have a translator present when discussing your match or your mentoring coordinator doing the translating herself.

If interested in learning more, just ask during the application process or call 604.876.2447 x236.

Get involved!

There are many ways to support Big Brothers. From volunteering to event participation to donating used clothing, each option is equally rewarding and beneficial to our programs.
